The genetical theory of natural selection.

چکیده
So melancholy a neglect of Darwin’s work suggests reflections upon the use of those rare and precious possessions of man—great books. It was, we believe, the custom of the late Professor Freeman to warn his students that mastery of one great book was worth any amount of knowledge of many lesser ones. The tendency of modern scientific teaching is to neglect the great books, to lay far too much stress upon relatively unimportant modern work, and to present masses of detail of doubtful truth and questionable weight in such a way as to obscure principles. . . . How many biological students of today have read The Origin? The majority know it only from extracts, a singularly ineffective means, for a work of genius does not easily lend itself to the scissors; its unity is too marked. Nothing can really take the place of a firsthand study of the work itself. R. A. Fisher and C. S. Stock (1915) [Fisher was 25 years old and his student friend Stock 27 in 1915. Professor E. A. Freeman was Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford, 1884–1892.]

More on the genetical theory of multilevel selection.
In my article The genetical theory of multilevel selection, I provided a synthesis of the theory of multilevel selection (MLS) and the theory of natural selection in class-structured populations. I framed this synthesis within Fisher's genetical paradigm, taking a strictly genetical approach to traits and fitness. I showed that this resolves a number of long-standing conceptual problems that ha...
متن کاملEvolutionarily Stable Strategies and Viability Selection in Mendelian Populations
For various genetical structures, including haploid and diploid. one-locus IIalleles, and n-locus additive viability random mating models, natural selection resulting from intrapopulation conflicts between random individuals leads to exactly those genetical equilibria which determine a mixture of strategies evolutionarily stable according to the game theory definition of Maynard Smith and Price...
متن کاملThe purpose of adaptation
A central feature of Darwin's theory of natural selection is that it explains the purpose of biological adaptation. Here, I: emphasize the scientific importance of understanding what adaptations are for, in terms of facilitating the derivation of empirically testable predictions; discuss the population genetical basis for Darwin's theory of the purpose of adaptation, with reference to Fisher's ...
متن کاملThe genetical theory of multilevel selection
The theory of multilevel selection (MLS) is beset with conceptual difficulties. Although it is widely agreed that covariance between group trait and group fitness may arise in the natural world and drive a response to 'group selection', ambiguity exists over the precise meaning of group trait and group fitness and as to whether group selection should be defined according to changes in frequenci...
متن کاملThe genetical theory of kin selection.
Natural selection operates both directly, via the impact of a trait upon the individual's own fitness, and indirectly, via the impact of the trait upon the fitness of the individual's genetically related social partners. These effects are often framed in terms of Hamilton's rule, rb - c > 0, which provides the central result of social-evolution theory. However, a number of studies have question...

A trend towards younger sexual initiation has been reported in recent years sug~ gesting that the trait is currently influenced by cultural factors. It is reasonable to SUspect, however, that in the past the age of first sexual intercourse could have bOOn partly under genetica.J.Coritrol and subject to natural selection. Although it would be premature to speculate about any relationship between...
